SEL PreK - 8th

Belmont-Cragin is an Ashoka “ChangeMaker” school that prioritizes empathy and social entrepreneurship as student outcomes. The Belmont-Cragin School community provides a socially supportive environment that motivates each child to reach his/her potential by embedding the SEL competencies throughout the day.  Belmont-Cragin School truly believes that students cannot learn if their social and emotional needs are not met. By implementing the SEL competencies (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making), our students acquire and effectively apply the necessary skills to manage emotions, make responsible decisions, and establish and maintain positive relationships, which will help them succeed in life.

We are recognized as an“Exemplary School” for SEL and is studied by other school districts nationally. To achieve this level of innovation, the program provides both our staff and parents with professional development/ training in Social Emotional Learning, anti-bullying and ACES.  Another facet of our work in SEL will arise from our new partnerships with Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, Youth Outreach, Depaul University and Chicago Tabernacle.  No longer will many of our families and students have to travel outside of the community to seek special medical help that these organizations can provide, such as in the treatment of children’s Mental Health issues and Asthma.
