The Belmont-Cragin School community implements personalized learning (PL) to cultivate scholars that demonstrate positive work habits, regularly set goals, self-monitor their accomplishments and responsibly collaborate with peers. Our school is partnered with LEAP Innovations, Summit Learning, Chicago Lights, Goodman Theater Puerto-Rican Arts Alliance, Old Town School of Folk Music and the CPS Department of Personalized Learning. Our work has been featured in Education Week and the Financial Times with dozens of educators visiting from the Chicagoland area studying best practices. PL is evident from the moment you walk into a classroom through the flexible seating we offer our students. Once in the classroom one would observe students working on different skills at the same time, depending on their abilities and areas of growth with 1:1 technology, mentoring and innovative projects. Teachers design lessons and tasks based on not only the varying academic levels of each student, which is accessed through data analysis and student conferences, but also on their personal learning style and interests. Students have opportunities to learn the Fine Arts through instruction in music, visual art, and dance, choir and drama which students take as a classroom, as well as, optional classes in music that students are free to sign up for according to their interests.Through personalized learning we are supplying students with a toolbox necessary to successfully be productive members of the ever-changing 21st century.
