The Belmont-Cragin School community fosters and supports a curriculum that creates bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural students through academically rigorous standards. Since 2014, our school is the only school that offers this researched based approach in the Belmont-Cragin area in partnership with the CPS Office of Language and Culture. Thomas & Collier’s longitudinal research findings from one-way and two-way dual language enrichment models of schooling demonstrate the substantial power of this program for enhancing student outcomes and fully closing the achievement gap in second language. Dual language schooling also can transform the experience of teachers, administrators, and parents into an inclusive and supportive school community for all (Thomas & Collier, 2004).
Our students will graduate as bi-literate, English and Spanish students with a multicultural perspective and the ability to become active participants in their community and the global world. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, school district, or county office of education in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. Our vision is to help students recognize the value of their academic success and see the tangible benefits of being bilingual (seal of biliteracy.org).
